Groin pain in athletes: how to return to sport
When groin pain limits training, returning as soon as symptoms ease may not be enough. Recovery should rebuild strength, changes of direction and the specific loads required by your sport.

Why waiting for pain to settle may not be enough
Pain around the pubic or groin area may relate to the adductors, abdominal wall, hip, pubic joint or other structures. Reducing symptoms matters, but returning to sport also requires rebuilding the capacity to tolerate strength, speed and repeated movement.
How to adapt training during recovery
Running, kicking, accelerating and changing direction are often among the most demanding loads. Rather than complete rest or unchanged training, it may help to temporarily adjust volume, intensity and movements that clearly increase symptoms.
Which capacities should be rebuilt
A plan may include adductor and trunk strength, coordination, progressive running and gradual exposure to changes of direction. Exercise selection and progression depend on the movements your activity requires and how the area responds after training.
Signs that you may be ready to progress
Before restoring usual intensity, check that you can tolerate relevant movements with control, increase volume without a sustained reaction and produce strength close to the demands of your sport. One pain-free test alone does not confirm readiness.
When an assessment may help
Ask for an assessment if pain keeps returning, limits training, changes your technique or does not improve after adjusting load. Physiotherapy reviews symptom-provoking movements, strength and coordination, mobility and progress to guide the next steps.
Frequently asked questions about sport and movement
Do I need to stop training completely?
Not always. Training load can often be adjusted temporarily so you maintain tolerable activity without repeatedly provoking a clear or sustained reaction.
When can I return to running and changing direction?
It depends on how you tolerate progressive running, strength work and sport-specific movement. Being pain-free at rest is not the only criterion for progression.
What should I regain before competing?
It is useful to rebuild strength, control, speed and tolerance to the training volume your sport requires, without creating a sustained symptom response.
How long does recovery from groin pain take?
There is no single timeline. It depends on the source of symptoms, how long they have been present, sporting demands and response to the recovery plan.
